By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Explain what Holi is and why it is celebrated.

  2. Understand the cultural significance of Holi in Sindhi / Indian tradition.

  3. Describe some of the traditional practices of Holi (playing with colors, gatherings) in simple Sindhi.

  4. Appreciate the idea of friendship and community that Holi represents.

Materials / Resources

  • Pictures / flashcards of people celebrating Holi (playing with colors)

  • Whiteboard / chart paper + marker

  • Drawing paper + colors (paint or color pencils)

  • Worksheet (see below)

  •  Short video / clip about Holi celebrations

Lesson Procedure

  1. Introduction / Warm-Up (5 min)

    • Begin by asking: “Do you know a festival called Holi?” / “توهان هولي جو جشن ٻڌو آهي؟”

    • Show pictures of Holi celebrations (people throwing color) and ask students what they think is happening.

    • Introduce: “هولي هڪ رنگين ۽ خوشيءَ وارو تہوار آهي.” (“Holi is a colorful and joyful festival.”)

  2. Teaching / Explanation (10 min)

    • Explain why Holi is celebrated (in a simple way): for friendship, the arrival of spring, joy, and to forget past differences.

    • Talk about traditional practices: playing with colored water or powder, singing, dancing, meeting friends.

    • Discuss that for many Sindhis, Holi is not just fun but has a message of love and harmony between people.

  3. Group / Practical Activity (10 min)

    • Divide students into small groups. Give each group some drawing paper + color pencils / paints.

    • Ask them to draw a scene of Holi: children playing with colors, water balloons, people laughing.

    • As they draw, encourage them to talk among themselves about how they would celebrate Holi with their own friends and family.

  4. Discussion / Reflection (5 min)

    • Ask some groups to show their drawing and explain: “In our drawing, we …” (“اسان جي تصوير ۾ …”)

    • Lead a discussion: “ڇو هولي اسان لاءِ اهم آهي؟” (“Why is Holi important to us?”)

    • Highlight key ideas: togetherness, fun, letting go of bad feelings, celebrating.

  5. Worksheet / Written Practice (5 min)

    • Distribute the worksheet (see below) and let students work individually or in pairs.

  6. Consolidation / Summary (3 min)

    • Recap the main points: what Holi is, how people celebrate, and why it's meaningful.

    • Ask a simple question: “توهان پنهنجو هولي ڇو جشن ڪندئو / جشن ڪندئين؟” (“Why would you like to celebrate Holi?”)

  7. Homework / Follow Up

    • Ask students to write (in Sindhi) two lines about how they would celebrate Holi if they had colors / water.

    • Or let them draw and color a Holi scene at home to show in the next class.
