LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify action words (verbs) in sentences.

  2. Use action words (verbs) in simple sentences.

  3. Understand the meaning of common action words and use them appropriately in speech and writing.

MATERIALS

  • Flashcards with pictures of actions (running, jumping, sitting, etc.)

  • Whiteboard and markers

  • Worksheet with action words and images

ACTIVITIES

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Start by writing a few simple sentences on the board:

    • "I run."

    • "She sings."

    • "We play."

  • Ask students: "What do you notice about these sentences?" (Guide them to understand that the words run, sings, and play are action words, also called verbs.)

  • Introduce the term action words or verbs: "Verbs are words that tell us what someone or something is doing."

2. Action Words Flashcards (8 minutes)

  • Show flashcards with pictures of people doing various actions (running, jumping, eating, etc.).

  • For each picture, ask the class, "What is this person doing?"

  • Write the corresponding action word on the board. For example:

    • A picture of someone running → "run"

    • A picture of someone eating → "eat"

    • A picture of someone jumping → "jump"

  • Ask students to repeat the action word after you.

3. Action Word Activity (7 minutes)

  • Have students stand up and follow your instructions. For example:

    • "Everyone, jump!"

    • "Now, everyone, sit down!"

    • "Can you clap your hands?"

    • "Let's all run in place!"

  • After each action, ask the students, "What did you just do?" and help them identify the verb.

4. Worksheet Activity (8 minutes)

  • Hand out a worksheet with pictures of people doing different actions. The worksheet will ask students to match the correct action word to each picture.

  • Example:

    • A picture of a child running → Write "run"

    • A picture of a person eating → Write "eat"

    • A picture of a person jumping → Write "jump"

  • Include a small section where students have to complete sentences with the correct action word (e.g., "I ___ to the park." - "run").

5. Conclusion (2 minutes)

  • Review the action words learned during the lesson.

  • Ask students to make their own sentences using action words. For example, "I play soccer" or "She sings a song."

  • Encourage students to use as many action words as they can in their sentences.

ASSESSMENT

  • Listen to the sentences students create during the conclusion activity to ensure they understand how to use action words.

  • Review their worksheets to check if they matched the correct action words with the pictures.
