LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the function of traffic lights.

  2. Identify the colours of the traffic light and what each one means.

  3. Describe simple traffic rules using the traffic light system.

MATERIALS

  • Flashcards or pictures of traffic lights (red, yellow, and green lights).

  • Whiteboard and markers or a chalkboard and chalk.

  • A worksheet with a traffic light diagram and fun activities.

ACTIVITIES

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Start by showing a picture or flashcards of a traffic light.

  • Ask students: “What do you see? What do traffic lights do?”

  • Explain that traffic lights help cars and people know when to stop, go, or wait.

2. Traffic Light Colours (7 minutes)

  • Draw or show a picture of a traffic light (red, yellow, green).

  • Explain what each colour means:

    • Red: Stop

    • Yellow: Wait

    • Green: Go

  • Ask students to repeat after you: "Red means stop," "Yellow means wait," "Green means go."

  • Encourage them to use simple sentences: “Red means stop the car!” or “Green means go!”

3. Interactive Activity (8 minutes)

  • Tell the students you will play a "Traffic Light Game."

  • Have the students stand up and line up.

  • When you say “Green,” they move forward, when you say “Red,” they stop, and when you say “Yellow,” they wait.

  • Repeat several times, letting them practice following traffic signals with their movements.

  • Ask them: “What happens when the light is red? What do you do when it is green?”

4. Worksheet Activity (7 minutes)

  • Distribute the worksheet with a simple diagram of a traffic light.

  • Ask the students to:

    1. Colour each part of the traffic light (red, yellow, green).

    2. Draw something next to the traffic light (e.g., a car, a pedestrian) showing what should happen when the light is red, yellow, or green.

    3. Write one sentence about each colour of the traffic light.

      • Example for red: "When the light is red, cars stop."

      • Example for yellow: "When the light is yellow, we wait."

      • Example for green: "When the light is green, cars go."

5. Conclusion (3 minutes)

  • Review what students have learned by asking: “What do you do when the light is red? What about yellow? What happens when it’s green?”

  • Praise them for participating in the traffic light game and completing the worksheet.

ASSESSMENT

  • Observe students during the traffic light game to check their understanding of when to stop, wait, and go.

  • Review the worksheets to see if students have drawn correctly and written simple sentences about the traffic lights.
